A magyar zöldség- és gyümölcságazatok külkereskedelmi versenyképességének alakulása AgEcon
Medina, Viktor.
Ennek a magyarázatát elsősorban a jelentős mértékben megnőtt déligyümölcsimport adja. A kedvezőtlen...

A Two-Stage Value Chain Model for Vegetable Marketing Chain Efficiency Evaluation: A Transaction Cost Approach AgEcon
Lu, Hualiang.
We applied a two-stage value chain model to investigate the effects of input application and occasional transaction costs on vegetable marketing chain efficiencies with a farm household-level data set. In the first stage, the production efficiencies with the combination of resource endowments, capital and managerial inputs, and production techniques were evaluated; then at the second stage, the marketing technical efficiencies were determined under the marketing value of the vegetables for three typical marketing chains in Nanjing area, P.R. China. The impacts of the transaction costs to the supply chain technical efficiency both at the production and marketing stages were examined by using Tobit model. Study showed that transaction costs significantly...

ANÁLISE DA ADOÇÃO DA TECNOLOGIA DA INFORMAÇÃO NA HORTICULTURA BRASILEIRA AgEcon
Boteon, Margarete; Silva, Rafaela Cristina Da; Deleo, Joao Paulo Bernardes.
A conclusão...

Cooperatives' Position in the Fresh Vegetable Industry AgEcon
Biggs, Gilbert W..
Seventy-three fresh vegetable marketing cooperatives handled 57 different fresh vegetable commodities weighing 1.6 billion pounds; these vegetables are valued at more than $218 million. In 1986, cooperatives handled more than 4 percent of the total volume of nine principal fresh vegetables produced in the United States. Important concerns of fresh vegetable marketing cooperatives were competition from domestic and foreign areas, overproduction, labor shortage and high costs, marketing, quality, and transportation. Although associations were using their facilities to 71 percent of capacity, 58 percent planned expansion over the next 5 years to provide facilities for handling the expected increase in new members and increased volume of current members.

De Gustibus Asparagus: Habits, Trade, and Welfare from Out of Season Imports of Fresh Vegetables AgEcon
Ferrier, Peyton Michael; Zhen, Chen.
Fresh vegetables, including asparagus, are now available in months outside of the domestic growing season for most U.S. consumers. We use the virtual price method to calculate the equivalent variation for increased availability in a demand system for fresh and frozen vegetables and find that virtual price of out-of-season asparagus is roughly 3 times higher than its in-season price in years prior to year round availability. We find the equivalent variation between 1986-1991 (when asparagus was available approximately half the year) and 1993-1999 (when it was available year round) to be 0.91 of consumer vegetable budgets, implying a welfare benefit of approximately $86 million annually. We also find evidence of habit formation for fresh but not frozen...

Sifuentes-Pallaoro,Dryelle; Aquino-Arantes,Cárita Rodrigues de; Ribeiro-Correa,Amanda; Clarete-Camili,Elisangela; Barbosa-Coelho',Maria de Fátima.
Abstract The objective of this study was to verify levels of shade and doses of earthworm humus in the production of Lactuca canadensis L. seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4 x 5 factorial scheme (four levels of shade and five doses of humus). The different levels were obtained using black polyethylene screen with 35, 50 and 70% shade and in full sun. The substrates were obtained by mixing commercial substrate for vegetables (Vivatto Slim ® plus), with earthworm humus in the proportions of 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60%. There was no seedlings emergence in the full sun and, the treatment with 50% of shade allows the best development. The substrate without humus and with 60% presented superior results but the higher dose stood out for...

Fate of Helicobacter pylori artificially inoculated in lettuce and carrot samples BJM
Gomes,Bruna C.; Martinis,Elaine C.P. de.
Helicobacter pylori is known, worldwide, as the causative agent of gastric diseases. However, its transmission route has not been completely understood. To evaluate the survival of H. pylori (a clinical and a reference strain) artificially inoculated on lettuce and carrot samples, portions of 25 g were inoculated with approximately 10(6) CFU/g of H. pylori and packed under normal and/or modified atmosphere (3% oxygen, 10% carbon dioxide, and 87% nitrogen). The inoculated food samples were stored at 8ºC, with daily enumeration of H. pylori populations on Columbia blood agar (CBA) and/ or Helicobacter pylori Special Peptone Agar (HPSPA). When CBA with antibiotics was used, the clinical isolate H. pylori HP1 was detected for up to 72 h in sanitized lettuce...

Florida Agriculture and the Vegetable Industry AgEcon
Stevens, Thomas J., III; Hodges, Alan W.; Mulkey, W. David.
Florida ranked ninth in the U.S. in agricultural receipts for the year 2000, and ranked first or second in receipts for 12 of the nation's top 25 agricultural commodities. Ten of these twelve leading agricultural commodities were fresh fruits or vegetables, and combined, they represented over 45 percent of the state's agricultural receipts in 2000. Despite Florida's preeminent standing as a producer of fresh fruits and vegetables, it's future leadership in this industry is less clear. In real terms, Florida's annual agricultural receipts have declined from $7.41 billion in 1992, to $6.42 billion in 2001. In 2000, receipts fell by over $521 million, the sharpest one-year drop since 1990. The overall trend in fresh vegetable receipts for the State has been...

Mixed vegetable powders – composed of purple sweet potato, red cabbage and beetroot at a 2:1:1 ratio – were incorporated with cereal base by an extrusion process to obtain a functional, ready-to-eat breakfast cereal. This study investigated the effects of mixed vegetable powder level (8, 12 and 16%), screw speed (300, 350 and 400 rpm) and feed moisture content (13, 15 and 17%) on the physical and functional properties of extrudates in breakfast cereal production using response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken experimental design. The results showed high correlation coefficients (R2 ) of multiple regression equations about the relationship among product responses and process variables, and no significant lack of fit (indicating a best-fit model)....
